Premier Contact Lens Services – Only at The Eye Institute

Have you tried contact lenses but had problems? Then it’s time to visit the Specialty Contact Lens Services at The Eye Institute (TEI).

Doctor placing contact lens in patient's eyeWhat makes TEI’s contact lens services special and different from all the other services? Actually, there are several  reasons, according to Nicholas Gidosh, chief of the Cornea and Contact Lens Service (CCLS)

First, it starts with the lenses themselves. Dr. Gidosh said the CCLS provides patients with a full range of specialty contact lenses, tailored to meet a wide variety of vision needs. A few of these include lenses for high amounts of astigmatism, multifocal contacts for patients who have difficulty seeing up close and need reading glasses, prosthetic soft lenses for patients with specific functional vision needs, gas permeable lenses which are highly customizable to provide sharp vision, orthokeratology which allows for overnight correction of nearsightedness, and scleral lenses which are a growing popular innovation in contact lens technology.

Advanced technology is another key factor that sets TEI apart in contact lens care. “Scleral lenses are one of the most popular options in the service due to their comfort and how they help those with dry eye and irregular cornea conditions like keratoconus,” Dr. Gidosh said. These lenses can also be used to correct higher-order aberrations, which are complex vision problems that affect how clearly patients see, especially in low light or at night. Aberrometers can measure the amount of defocused light within the visual system beyond the patient's prescription.

“One of the newest technology innovations at TEI allows these aberrations to be measured and then corrected within the patient's scleral lens,” said Dr. Gidosh. “This has resulted in some patients seeing multiple lines better than before or subjective improvements like sharper single vision that corrects distortion.”

Patient modeling specialty contact lensTEI also has profilometry and EyePrint molding technology, which can result in more accurate measurements of the eye's shape. This helps with getting better, more accurate contact lens fits, and is faster for the patient in less visits. It can also be used to resolve some of the common fitting issues seen with many types of contact lenses, according to Dr. Gidosh.

Finally, TEI’s optometrists in the contact lens service have  had extensive training with contact lenses over their careers. Each doctor has completed a Cornea and Contact Lens residency and has regularly attended national meetings to stay on the cutting edge of modern contact lens practice.

Drs. Gidosh and Gabriel Fickett have routinely attended the annual Association of Contact Lens Educators meeting to ensure TEI meets or exceeds the service of other university clinical facilities regarding patient care services. TEI’s doctors have also presented continuing education lectures at local and national meetings to share their knowledge and expertise with colleagues and have also been featured in several journals.
