Our eyes are an important part of our life and should not be taken for granted.
Below are some tips to protect your eyes and save your vision from sight threatening conditions.
- Get your eyes checked regularly. The best solution to prevent any eye problems is to have regular routine eye checkups.
- Wear Sunglasses. Always wear UV protection when outdoors to reduce the risk of cataracts and macular degeneration.
- Take Breaks. Give your eyes a break from digital devices and follow the 20-20-20 rule. Take a 20 second break every 20 minutes and view something 20 feet away.
- Keep Distance. The brightness and glare from computers, tablets, smartphones and televisions can lead to eyestrain after excess use. Position your computer screen 20 to 24 inches from your eyes.
- Eat Healthy Foods. What we eat is as important to our eye health as our overall health. Fruits and vegetables have nutrients that help to keep our eyes healthy.
- Blink Often. People who use a computer tend to blink less frequently than normal. Minimize your chances of developing dry eyes when using a computer by blinking frequently.
- Use Eye Protection. Construction workers and many factory workers are ones at risk of eye injuries while they are on the job. It is recommended to use the eye protection for their job.
- Stop Smoking. Smoking is as dangerous to your eyes as it is to the rest of your body. Smoking has been found to increase your risk of eye problems like early cataracts, macular degeneration and glaucoma.
Healthy vision is one of the most valued senses and it is important to keep your eyes healthy by practicing the above guidelines. It is also important to see an eye care professional right away if you are experiencing any changes in your vision, eye pain, double vision, and flashes. There are many ways to keep your vision healthy, and getting a yearly eye exam is one of the best ways to do so.
The Eye Institute of Salus University (TEI) offers comprehensive exams for all ages. If you have not had an annual eye exam in the last year, contact The Eye Institute to make an appointment at one of our practice locations.
