The Eye Institute (TEI) of Salus University, in collaboration with Temple Health, is proud to introduce Real World Diabetes – a course focused on diabetes education.
Diabetes, which affects approximately 30 million people in the United States, is a condition caused by the body’s inability to produce or respond to insulin – resulting in abnormal levels of glucose (sugar) in the body.
Those who suffer from the disease are at a higher risk for serious eye conditions including cataracts, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy. For that reason, TEI has partnered with Temple Health for an educational program that will teach participants important aspects of managing diabetes and their overall health.
This free educational series, which is open to TEI patients and members of the local community, is taught by Casey Dascher, RD, LDN, CDE, Diabetes Education Coordinator with Temple University Hospital.
“Diabetes is a disease where 90 percent of the disease related decisions are made by the patient,” said Dascher. “Diabetes education empowers the patient to make better decisions.”
Over the course of five weeks, participants will learn healthy meal planning, ways to stay physically active, the importance of regular doctor’s visits and vital numbers to know about their diabetes.
“Our goal is really to make sure that we set people up for success,” she said.
Dascher also notes that because the course is part of a series, attendance at each session is necessary. Classes will be held at TEI’s Oak Lane campus from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
The scheduled class dates are as follows:
