According to the World Health Organization (WHO), an estimated 253 million people worldwide suffer from some form of visual impairment and more than 75 percent of all vision issues are avoidable. Vision conditions such as glaucoma and cataracts can deteriorate one’s eyesight but receiving treatment and care can make all the difference in preventing total blindness.
Access to comprehensive eye care for children and adults is not readily available in a large part of the world. As a result, on the second Thursday of October the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) hosts “World Sight Day” with the goal of raising awareness about blindness and vision impairment and bringing global attention to the importance of universal eye health.
This year’s call to action is “Eye Care Everywhere.”
