The Pennsylvania Ear Institute (PEI) of Salus University recently hosted its second annual Fall Open House on Saturday, October 20. Students and faculty were on-hand to educate members of the community and raise awareness about healthy hearing and balance.
More than 60 people who were in attendance were given tours of the state-of-the-art facility and first-hand demonstrations of PEI’s enhanced diagnostic equipment. There were also fun activities for children, light refreshments and a raffle.
PEI serves as the on-campus clinical facility for the University’s Osborne College of Audiology. Students had the opportunity to showcase their clinical skills through video otoscopy (ear exam) and complimentary hearing screenings. Anyone who failed a hearing screening was referred to PEI for a comprehensive evaluation.
“I always thought I had pretty good hearing - I guess I didn’t realize that there were certain sounds that I’ve been missing,” said Philadelphia native, John Chiricco.
PEI’s audiologists also hosted expert sessions, where they provided information on topics related to hearing aids, tinnitus, pediatrics, vestibular and balance.
“This is a great opportunity to educate the community,” PEI audiologist Dr. Elizabeth Sedunov said. “The average person waits seven years before seeking help for their hearing loss – we want people to know that there are great treatment options available.”
Many who attended say they walked away with a wealth of new knowledge.
“I didn’t realize that noise exposure – even for a short period of time can damage your ears,” said Michelle Turner of Jenkintown. “I have to take more precautions because I definitely want to keep my hearing for as long as I can.”
PEI offers to help you hear your best, including comprehensive hearing evaluations, individualized treatment plans, custom hearing protection, amplification devices and hearing aid cleaning and repair. For more information on PEI’s services, please call 215.780.3180.
