The Eye Institute Marks its 40th Anniversary

The Eye Institute (TEI) of Salus University has been a valuable vision care resource for the Philadelphia community, and this year the clinical facility marks its 40th anniversary.

Construction of TEI’s original building began in 1975 and was completed in late 1977. In April of the following year, TEI showcased its state-of-the-art facility with an official “grand opening” celebration.

In an effort to expand patient care in the community, in the early 2000s TEI opened two satellite facilities in the Mt. Airy and Strawberry Mansion sections of Philadelphia.

The Strawberry Mansion facility eventually relocated to East Falls in November 2010 and the Mt. Airy facility moved to a newly renovated space in Chestnut Hill in 2012. That same year, an $11.2 million renovation of TEI’s main Oak Lane location was finalized. The upgrade included a modern appearance, state-of-the-art equipment, more enhanced optometric technology and integrated electronic medical records.

Last year brought even more growth and expansion. In collaboration with Delaware Valley Community Health, Inc. (DVCH), TEI opened its fourth satellite location providing comprehensive adult and pediatric eye care in Norristown, Pa.

That same year TEI partnered with Ampersand Health to open CityLife Neighborhood Clinics - Oak Lane - an 8,000 square-foot primary care clinical facility located on the upper level of TEI. The addition gives patients the opportunity to receive primary care and vision care services in the same location.

While TEI has undergone a number of transformations and enhancements over the last 40 years, the mission remains the same.

With four locations, TEI’s highly trained optometrists, ophthalmologists, low vision therapists, residents, optometric interns and staff continue to provide the highest quality vision care to patients across the region.
