SLI Staff and Students Take Part in Brain Injury 5K

Staff members and students from the Speech-Language Institute (SLI) of Salus University laced up their sneakers and hit the pavement – all for a good cause.

Sponsored by the Brain Injury Association of Pennsylvania (BIAPA) and MossRehab, the Brain Injury Challenge – Race for Recovery 5K was held on October 28 at Tyler State Park in Bucks County. Nearly two dozen participants from Salus and SLI took part in the race.

“It makes me proud to be a part of Salus. I am thankful that the members of our institution are so supportive of our program,” said Robert Serianni, MS, CCC-SLP, SLI clinical director. “I appreciate all that they do for our students, program, university and community.”

From avid runners to beginners, the race route was customized to fit various skill levels. There was even a one mile wheelchair roll for handicap participants. Members of the Salus team were also among the top finishers. SLI clinical educator Alison Finkelstein, MA, CCC-SLP placed second in her division and University President Dr. Michael H. Mittelman placed third.

A total of more than $30,000 was raised by runners and donors and Salus was one of the top ten fundraising teams. The money will go toward a number of projects including: providing adequate healthcare and education regarding brain injury, the fitting and distribution of free bike helmets, summer camp activities and support groups.

The goal of the event was not only to raise money but also to increase public awareness about the cause and prevention of brain injuries. More than 10 million Americans are living with brain injury, the result of incidents such as traffic accidents, sports injuries, tumors and even stroke.

Victims are often left with physical, sensory, cognitive and communication deficits, including memory loss, slurred speech, vision impairment, and balance disorders. In collaboration with our three clinical facilities, Salus offers an array of resources and services to treat those affected by brain injury.

SLI offers treatment and therapy for common deficits such as dysarthria (slurred speech) and dysphagia (trouble swallowing). The Eye Institute (TEI) provides specialized care for visual issues such as amblyopia (lazy eye), strabismus (eyeturn), and accommodative (focusing). The Pennsylvania Ear Institute (PEI) offers vestibular evaluations and treatment for patients suffering from vertigo, dizziness and other balance-related issues.
