Laryngectomee and Throat Cancer Club Coming Soon

Woman holding her throatThe Speech-Language Institute (SLI) of Salus University is forming a Laryngectomee Club for those who have undergone laryngectomy surgery and those suffering with throat cancer. The club is scheduled to begin meeting in the fall of 2017 with specific dates and times to be determined.

Led by professional speech-language pathologist and clinical educator at SLI Amy Lustig, PhD, CCC-SLP, the group aims to provide a supportive environment to share information, personal stories and ideas for living well. The group is also looking for those who are living with laryngectomy/throat cancer outcomes to serve as experts and assistance for others in the club by sharing their experiences. Those who have undergone laryngectomy surgery – the removal of the larynx – may experience difficulty speaking, swallowing, and breathing; those with throat cancer experience similar issues.

Dr. Lustig, who also owns her own private practice, Restorative Speech & Swallow in Jenkintown, Pa., said she wanted to initially start the club because she recognized a lack of available support groups for these populations.

“There are limited community-based resources for people living with laryngectomy surgeries and chronic effects of throat cancer,” she said. “I wanted to create a space where people could come together and share their experiences, obtain information, and find support with one another.”

She hopes participants will feel comfortable within the group and find useful resources.

“Because we're just getting started, the initial participants will be able to shape the group to meet their specific needs and situations - I'm open to doing anything that has value to them,” she said. “We can focus on socializing, information sharing, locating expert speakers, and/or anything else people come up with.”

Those interested in learning more about the group or to sign up can contact Dr. Lustig directly at 215-460-1150 or at RestorativeSpeech@gmail.com. Participation in the Laryngectomee Club is free of charge.
