A recent study from John Hopkins researchers claims the number of US adults aged 20 and older with hearing loss is anticipated to rise from over 44 million in 2020 to almost 74 million by 2060. Adults 70 years of age and older will see the greatest increase with approximately 55 percent experiencing hearing loss.
With this anticipated rise in hearing loss, it’s important to know how to protect your hearing from permanent damage.
- Limiting your exposure to loud sounds can help avoid hearing loss. Any noise exposure over long periods of time above 85 decibels can cause permanent hearing damage. Noises from common items such as lawnmowers, blenders, hair dryers, car horns, concerts, fireworks and gun shots are all above 85 decibels.
- Protecting your ears can prevent hearing loss. If you know you’ll be exposed to loud environments, take the proper precautions by wearing ear plugs or ear muffs.
- Even if you don’t have noticeable hearing loss, annual hearing exams can help pinpoint changes in your hearing. Hearing loss typically occurs over time and can be tough to distinguish. An annual comprehensive hearing exam with a qualified audiologist can track changes in your hearing and help take steps to avoid further damage. Exams are especially important for those who are exposed to loud noises frequently at work.
