February 12, 2016: Clinical Application of Ophthalmic Lasers 

Dr. Alissa Coyne

Dr. Alissa CoyneThis lecture will allow the practitioner to develop an understanding of different types of lasers utilized in the eye care profession. The background of lasers and their specific mechanisms of action will be reviewed with concentration on ocular tissue reactions during laser procedures. Different treatment modalities and recommendations will also be examined in order to promote understanding and further utilization of laser procedures in their optometric practice.

Dr. Alissa Coyne, assistant professor at Salus University, has lectured internationally and published on the subject of herpes simplex keratitis and ocular allergies.  She has a special interest in ocular disease, emergency eye care and ocular pharmacology. Dr. Coyne earned her Doctor of Optometry degree from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry at Salus University and completed a primary care residency at The Eye Institute. Dr. Coyne teaches the ophthalmic lasers lab at Salus University and holds a laser certification certificate from the Northeastern State University Oklahoma College of Optometry.

Dr. Erin KennyDr. Erin Kenny: Magnifying Your Knowledge: Technology and Techniques for Your Primary Care Low Vision Exam

Dr. Kenny will be discussing techniques, and more specifically, technology that can be beneficial for primary care low vision examinations. She will be focusing on mild visual impairment cases, and new and exciting apps to show to patients.

Dr. Kenny earned her Doctor of Optometry degree from Salus University Pennsylvania College of Optometry, and is currently a Low Vision resident at The Eye Institute.

Dr. Amanda Gerrouge: To Be Or Not To Be Amblyopia?

Dr. Amanda GerrougeThis lecture will review pediatric cases that may or may not lead to a diagnosis of amblyopia, how one should arrive at the appropriate diagnosis, and appropriate management strategies for these cases.   

Dr. Gerrouge earned her Doctor of Optometry degree from Salus University Pennsylvania College of Optometry and is currently a Pediatric resident at The Eye Institute.

The goals of the program are:

  • To develop a network of professionals in order to share information and strengthen clinical knowledge
  • To foster professional development in the optometric community
  • To provide Continuing Education opportunities to alumni and friends of Salus University

These sessions are open to local eye care providers at no charge. COPE approval has been submitted for these sessions. All sessions will be held in the Toland Classroom on the upper level of The Eye Institute from 7:30 a.m. - 8:45 a.m. For your convenience, please use the Spencer Avenue staff and student parking lot and entrance. Light refreshments will be served.
