TEI Doctors Help Examine More Than 300 Athletes at 2017 NJ Special Olympics
Doctors and students from The Eye Institute (TEI) of Salus University joined members of the Special Olympics Lions Club International Opening Eyes Program and the New Jersey Society of Optometric Physicians to examine more than 300 athletes at the annual NJ Special Olympics Summer Games. The team — which consisted of Drs. Andrew Meagher, Luis Trujillo, and Michael Gallaway, along with the University’s Pennsylvania College of Optometry Accelerated Scholars students Bella Sudit ’18, Alexander Jobe ’19, and Lauren White ’19 — helped connect participants with more than 200 complimentary pairs of prescription eyeglasses, sunglasses, rec specs sports goggles, and swim goggles, courtesy of Liberty Sport, Essilor and Safilo.
According to Dr. Meagher, volunteering at the event was a great experience for all involved. Volunteerism has always been an important part of his education and professional practice.
"I enjoy helping others, especially those who in some cases cannot help themselves," he said. "I had an interest in optometry mainly because it allows me to provide the needs to improve someone's vision and in essence that will improve their quality of life."
The Opening Eyes Program provides complimentary vision exams and eyewear to Special Olympics athletes. The initiative helps families who may be overwhelmed by medical and therapy expenses or do not have access to good medical care, according to Dr. Kimberly K. Friedman, clinical director for the Special Olympics Lions Club International Opening Eyes Program.
