InfantSEE Program Provides Free, Quality Eye Exams to Children

Mother and babyDid you know one in 10 children are at risk for a vision impairment? Did you know one in 25 children will develop strabismus, commonly referred to as cross-eye? Well, according to the American Optometric Association (AOA), these are just two of the many eye deficiencies children can possibly develop in their early years. With this knowledge, it’s essential for parents to take precautions toward protecting their children’s visual health. Fortunately, The Eye Institute (TEI) can help families, regardless of their income or insurance coverage, through the InfantSEE program.

TEI is a participating provider in the AOA’s InfantSEE program. Launched in partnership with The Vision Care Institute of Johnson & Johnson Vision Care Inc., InfantSEE provides children with no-cost eye assessments by optometrists. The InfantSEE program, supported by former president Jimmy Carter, the honorary national chair and spokesman, provides families with an opportunity for early detection and treatment of possible vision impairments in infants. Many eye conditions are often undiagnosed and untreated; problems can be missed at standard check-ups because the symptoms are not evident, leading to further eye issues as children age. The InfantSEE program encourages parents to schedule eye exams for their children between the ages of six-to-12-months to proactively address any concerns.

Dr. Marianne Boltz, former Pennsylvania Optometric Association president, shared her experience with InfantSEE during an event at Salus University Pennsylvania College of Optometry, saying she “had a wonderful opportunity to speak to the students as an InfantSEE provider, pediatric optometrist and organization leader.” As a result of this event, Senator Mike Folmer introduced a Pennsylvania Senate proclamation recognizing the InfantSEE program each September.

The right treatment and care for your child’s vision is crucial to their development. Untreated impairments can lead to many issues involved in learning and permanent eye damage. It’s crucial  for families to bring their infants in to an InfantSEE provider to ensure they have the healthy life they deserve.
