Dry Eye Clinic Joins TEI’s Menu of Specialty Services

Red eyeThe Eye Institute of Salus University’s Dry Eye Specialty Service is the latest offering for patients. Led by Drs. Kriti Bhagat and Laine Higa, the Dry Eye Clinic schedules patients on Thursday afternoons and focuses on the diagnosis and management of Dry Eye Syndrome, also known as Ocular Surface Disease. Each patient will have a comprehensive dry eye evaluation, using the latest technology, and receive personalized treatment and management plans.

Dr. Bhagat said the need for the Dry Eye Clinic arose because of the large number of patients requiring a detailed dry eye evaluation and the desire to give each patient a thorough, customized therapy plan.

About 26 million Americans report experiencing symptoms of Dry Eye Syndrome, according to a recent Gallup poll. There are numerous contributing factors to dry eyes, including: age, health, environment and medications. Common activities such as looking a computer screen for extended periods of time or sitting in a heated room may also cause Dry Eye Syndrome.

Symptoms of dry eye may include:

  • Scratchy or itchy eyes
  • Redness or irritation of the eyes
  • Blurry vision
  • Burning sensation of the eyes
  • Feeling of having something in the eyes
  • Constant tearing of the eyes
  • Excessive blinking
  • Inability to wear contact lenses due to dryness

Untreated dry eye syndrome can cause damage to the cornea, the front surface of the eye. Early diagnosis and treatment of the condition can avoid damaging the cornea and improve the quality of vision.
